OK, so. We want to have a LAN party. To convince the lab that this is a good idea, we're going to need a list of at least 15 crazed, caffeine-fueled gamers looking to converge on the lab to kick some virtual ass.
Sign your name below if interested, and put what game you want next to your name. Do It Now! >:3
UPDATE 4/11: - Ryan
So it seems from the last meeting that we have a lot of people interested in this event! We're going to try to host the first LAN event this Friday (4/17) around 7PM. As I mentioned before, we have some games available (warcraft, starcraft, CS/TF2), and we might keep the type of games to a minimum so we can have more people playing the same type of games. If you do have a suggestion for a game, we can definitely aquire whatever it is you're looking for, so please make suggestions!
So I was brainstorming a couple of ways to organize the games:
1) We could do a queueing system, where we have several hubs (maybe 8 computers dedicated for two different 2v2 RTS games, 8 dedicated for a open server CS game, etc) where there could be a sign up sheet and once there are enough people to run a game, they could start. Once they finish, the next people who signed up for that "event" would take over, etc.
2) We could do a tournament style approach where we can organize one or two large events where people could make teams for certain games and we could play single elimination or swiss rounds for bragging rights.
3) We could do a free for all, a sort of "grab some people, find some machines, and go" approach.
Or we could a mixture of some, like, maybe half the computers for a queueing approach, and maybe the other half for people that want to dick around, or play small quick 1v1 games. Or maybe you have a different idea? Lets hear your input!
Also, we don't have to keep this restricted to just computer games. We can definitely set up some board games in the back, such as Settlers of Catan, Munchkin, apples to apples, etc. Also, people that play Magic, the Gathering could bring decks and get some multiplayer games going. It's totally open ended!
A couple of other things to note that people were asking:
1) You don't have to bring your own laptop. As a matter of fact, I would suggest that you don't. Henry (the guy who runs the undergrad lab [mostly]) is setting up the games on all the Windows machines.
2) Bring a friend! We have around 30 computers (i think 27 was the exact number), and at the meeting it looked like there were about 10-15 people who raised their hands when I asked who would attend. Try to keep it to bringing one or two friends, because it could get overcrowded very quickly, but its hard to gauge these things. Thats why you should post here (even if you've posted that you're coming already) if you're interested.
3) Food. I'm going to try to get pizza and drinks, etc (hopefully it'll be funded like our meetings). I need to look into this, but it shouldn't be a problem. Since there will probably be a bunch of people, if each person brought a bag of chips or a 2 liter bottle of something, we'd definitely have more than enough food to go around. Or maybe some of you more motivated people might want to bake some treats :)
4) We have permission to go as late as we want, and because I think a bunch of the terminal assistants will be playing with us, it shouldn't be a problem for shutting things down.
I'm working with Henry on setting this up, so when I get specifics on more things, I'll update this "update". Till then, give your suggestions, qualms, and queries! See you all Friday!
UPDATE 4/6: - Ryan
The LAN party is approved! Games that are accessable and easy to install include:
Starcraft (Original and Broodwars)
Warcraft 3
TF2 and/or CS (We believe we can pull this off)
several others that I can't remember, but I'll have a more definite list by the meeting
The best night that we can do it is on Fridays, so we'll take a vote at the meeting on which Friday would be best for people. So show up and vote!
UPDATE 3/23: - Ryan
Talking with people to set it up, I'll have an update by the next meeting!
UPDATE 2/26: - Ryan
Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates. Its been extremely busy for me the past couple of weeks. However, as I promised some people last meeting, I will try to get this underway, talking to people next week and trying to have out first LAN day (or night) after spring break. I'll also try to schedule a couple days in advance, probably one in April and one in May. If you guys have any suggestions, let me know. Also, please bring friends! The more the better.

FPSes would be pretty sweet. Counter Strike? (I know its old but there is a reason why so many people still play it)

Let's do something free / open source. It'd ensure that everyone can play.

Will there be any Xbox gaming or is this strictly a computer LAN party?

It's not going to be "strictly" a computer LAN party since people can bring board games and what not, but there has not been any arraignments for console gaming. This could be something that we could look to in the future though.
